Description

One very common issue for amateur golfers is being fixated on swing plane as well as the hand and arm positions in the backswing. Well, hand and arm positions and swing plane are certainly important however, your focus on these areas could be costing you tons of speed and consistency. In this video, I will show you how important it is to prioritize your backswing around weight shift and rotation. I'll also show you what to look for in your own swing so that you know exactly which area of the swing you need to work on first.

Video Practice Points
  • Make sure you have proper axis tilt at address. Spine just inside your lead knee.
  • Shift your weight to help start the swing.
  • Focus on rotation before you work on hand and arm positions at the top of the swing.
WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.120 --> 00:00:04.000 Hey, hey, what's up everyone? This is RST 2 00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:06.179 instructor Chris Tyler and we are back 3 00:00:06.179 --> 00:00:08.140 with this week's tour analysis. We are 4 00:00:08.140 --> 00:00:09.800 actually going to be shifting our focus 5 00:00:09.800 --> 00:00:12.660 over to the LPGA Tour this week, where 6 00:00:12.660 --> 00:00:14.160 Anna Nordquist was able to pick up her 7 00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:16.059 first victory at the ShopRite this past 8 00:00:16.059 --> 00:00:17.859 weekend. So, congratulations to her. 9 00:00:18.820 --> 00:00:20.519 Obviously, no offense to Steven Bowditch 10 00:00:20.519 --> 00:00:22.620 and the PGA Tour player, the winner of 11 00:00:22.620 --> 00:00:25.120 this past weekend. I just wanted to be 12 00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:27.000 able to kind of focus in on two really 13 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:27.679 critical areas 14 00:00:40.359 --> 00:00:45.820 of the golf swing that I think need to be 15 00:00:45.820 --> 00:00:47.579 prioritized. Long before, a lot of the 16 00:00:47.579 --> 00:00:48.740 other things that you're starting to try 17 00:00:48.740 --> 00:00:50.719 to work on in your golf swing. I think a 18 00:00:50.719 --> 00:00:52.859 lot of the times we see as a big mistake 19 00:00:52.859 --> 00:00:54.560 is that people really get fixated on a 20 00:00:54.560 --> 00:00:56.079 hand and arm position at the top of their 21 00:00:56.079 --> 00:00:57.799 swing. They want to have this beautiful 22 00:00:57.799 --> 00:00:59.399 on-plane looking swing and they want to 23 00:00:59.399 --> 00:01:01.500 just focus right on that. And when they 24 00:01:01.500 --> 00:01:05.140 do this, We find that they shut down two 25 00:01:05.140 --> 00:01:06.700 really important factors of the golf 26 00:01:06.700 --> 00:01:09.280 swing. That are going to help us get good 27 00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:11.799 width and good rotation and good power 28 00:01:11.799 --> 00:01:13.799 built up so that we can, in turn, use 29 00:01:13.799 --> 00:01:15.739 that for club head speed. Yeah, hand and 30 00:01:15.739 --> 00:01:17.719 arm positions are really important at the 31 00:01:17.719 --> 00:01:19.019 top of the swing, of course. We're not 32 00:01:19.019 --> 00:01:20.420 going to argue that. We understand how 33 00:01:20.420 --> 00:01:22.000 the cause and effect of some of the 34 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:23.359 positions if your hands and arms are a 35 00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:24.400 little bit deep, or if they're a little 36 00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:26.420 bit too vertical. We understand those 37 00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:28.200 things, but if we can still shift our 38 00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:29.920 priorities over to these two really key 39 00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:31.840 areas, In turn, you're going to be able 40 00:01:31.840 --> 00:01:33.719 to become a lot more consistent. And 41 00:01:33.719 --> 00:01:35.099 you're also going to be able to set 42 00:01:35.099 --> 00:01:36.719 yourself up so you can build a lot more 43 00:01:36.719 --> 00:01:38.939 leverage in your golf swing. Alright, so 44 00:01:38.939 --> 00:01:40.299 let's go ahead and take a look here from 45 00:01:40.299 --> 00:01:41.400 a face-on perspective. 46 00:01:42.140 --> 00:01:45.540 Let me get in a pause here for us. Hold 47 00:01:45.540 --> 00:01:46.200 on one sec. 48 00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:49.319 Okay, so from a face-on perspective, if 49 00:01:49.319 --> 00:01:51.540 you're not seeing that you have axis tilt 50 00:01:51.540 --> 00:01:53.780 at your address position, then you need 51 00:01:53.780 --> 00:01:55.280 to make sure that you have that in place. 52 00:01:55.599 --> 00:01:57.640 Axis tilt is really critical because it 53 00:01:57.640 --> 00:01:59.379 allows you to put the head in behind the 54 00:01:59.379 --> 00:01:59.799 golf ball. 55 00:02:00.559 --> 00:02:02.959 It allows you to be able to put the right 56 00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:04.579 side or your trail side in a less 57 00:02:04.579 --> 00:02:07.019 dominating position. It also allows you 58 00:02:07.019 --> 00:02:08.740 to be able to rotate around your axis 59 00:02:08.740 --> 00:02:10.759 properly without causing yourself to 60 00:02:10.759 --> 00:02:12.379 possibly over-rotate and have your spine 61 00:02:12.379 --> 00:02:13.979 leaning more towards the target. That can 62 00:02:13.979 --> 00:02:15.340 actually be very detrimental. That can 63 00:02:15.340 --> 00:02:17.659 hurt the body. That can put a lot of 64 00:02:17.659 --> 00:02:20.080 pressure on the lower part of your back. 65 00:02:20.580 --> 00:02:21.860 Alright, so you want to make sure that 66 00:02:21.860 --> 00:02:24.039 you have axis tilt. I'm going to do some 67 00:02:24.039 --> 00:02:26.000 recommended videos during this process. 68 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:28.039 And our recommended videos are to the 69 00:02:28.039 --> 00:02:29.259 right-hand side of the video player, 70 00:02:29.259 --> 00:02:31.360 where it says Recommended video. Just 71 00:02:31.360 --> 00:02:32.960 click on that tab. All these videos that 72 00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:35.120 I discuss during these analysis will be 73 00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:36.479 in there. So just click that. You'll see 74 00:02:36.479 --> 00:02:36.979 all the videos. 75 00:02:37.560 --> 00:02:39.340 You'll see hip bump axis tilt in there. 76 00:02:39.400 --> 00:02:40.680 It's a really good video that talks about 77 00:02:40.680 --> 00:02:42.560 how to get proper axis tilt at your 78 00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:44.740 address position. And I think this is one 79 00:02:44.740 --> 00:02:46.539 of the biggest overlooked features of the 80 00:02:46.539 --> 00:02:49.219 setup position. And it's really, really 81 00:02:49.219 --> 00:02:51.680 important. So the next two things that I 82 00:02:51.680 --> 00:02:54.000 want you to be able to understand, or I 83 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:55.280 want you to be able to see in your golf 84 00:02:55.280 --> 00:02:57.599 swing, before you start thinking about a 85 00:02:57.599 --> 00:02:58.539 hand and arm position. 86 00:02:59.120 --> 00:02:59.460 Because yes, 87 00:03:00.039 --> 00:03:01.259 you know, Anna's right elbow is a little 88 00:03:01.259 --> 00:03:03.219 bit on the deep side. Her hands are a 89 00:03:03.219 --> 00:03:04.520 little bit deep in relationship to the 90 00:03:04.520 --> 00:03:06.479 center of her chest. That's where we 91 00:03:06.479 --> 00:03:08.099 would be, you know, from a rotary swing 92 00:03:08.099 --> 00:03:09.319 standpoint, we would still want to 93 00:03:09.319 --> 00:03:12.340 correct that. But what she does do well 94 00:03:12.340 --> 00:03:14.139 in her golf swing is she does the two big 95 00:03:14.139 --> 00:03:15.439 things. And if you look at the whole 96 00:03:15.439 --> 00:03:18.259 mantra behind the rotary swing is that we 97 00:03:18.259 --> 00:03:19.979 want to think of it as a big, big body 98 00:03:19.979 --> 00:03:22.120 turn and a teeny tiny little arm 99 00:03:22.120 --> 00:03:22.439 movement. 100 00:03:22.979 --> 00:03:24.740 All right. So here are the moves that we 101 00:03:24.740 --> 00:03:26.780 want to focus on. If you don't see your 102 00:03:26.780 --> 00:03:28.780 golf swing having weight shift in it. So 103 00:03:28.780 --> 00:03:29.860 watch your right side here. 104 00:03:30.439 --> 00:03:31.780 She's going to shift into that right 105 00:03:31.780 --> 00:03:32.180 side. 106 00:03:32.740 --> 00:03:35.099 Really important. One of the more things 107 00:03:35.099 --> 00:03:36.560 that we would consider the crux of the 108 00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:39.199 golf swing in a sense is weight shift. So 109 00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:40.080 you've got to be able to shift your 110 00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:41.419 weight. That's the first and foremost. 111 00:03:41.419 --> 00:03:43.840 And then you've got to be able to make 112 00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:45.780 sure that you're making a big wide turn, 113 00:03:45.960 --> 00:03:47.259 a big body turn. So you can see that 114 00:03:47.259 --> 00:03:49.500 she's made a good full turn and she's 115 00:03:49.500 --> 00:03:51.139 shifted her weight into that trail side. 116 00:03:51.139 --> 00:03:53.620 So she's loading things up here. Now, if 117 00:03:53.620 --> 00:03:55.740 we focus on rotation and we focus on 118 00:03:55.740 --> 00:03:57.599 weight shift, then takeaway positions 119 00:03:57.599 --> 00:03:59.340 become a lot easier. And I know that's 120 00:03:59.340 --> 00:04:00.300 one of the things where people are like, 121 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:02.360 how do I fix my takeaway? Like my right 122 00:04:02.360 --> 00:04:04.199 arm breaks really early. My club gets 123 00:04:04.199 --> 00:04:04.599 inside. 124 00:04:05.859 --> 00:04:07.919 But again, if we're hanging onto the golf 125 00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:10.560 club at the address position here. Okay, 126 00:04:10.840 --> 00:04:12.039 our arms are attached to our shoulders. 127 00:04:12.259 --> 00:04:13.539 And if we just shifted our weight and we 128 00:04:13.539 --> 00:04:16.100 just rotated our shoulders by pulling our 129 00:04:16.100 --> 00:04:17.639 shoulder blade or scapula, feeling like 130 00:04:17.639 --> 00:04:19.779 we're pulling it in towards our spine. In 131 00:04:19.779 --> 00:04:20.759 turn, that's going to rotate your 132 00:04:20.759 --> 00:04:22.040 shoulders and move your hands and arms. 133 00:04:22.180 --> 00:04:23.939 And that's what Anna does so, so well. So 134 00:04:23.939 --> 00:04:25.839 watch here as she works into a takeaway 135 00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:28.519 position. Pretty much textbook here. You 136 00:04:28.519 --> 00:04:30.040 can see the club shaft is parallel to the 137 00:04:30.040 --> 00:04:30.360 ground. 138 00:04:31.120 --> 00:04:32.720 You can see that both arms are really 139 00:04:32.720 --> 00:04:34.540 straight and really relaxed. She's just 140 00:04:34.540 --> 00:04:37.220 turned her body nice 45 degrees. Really, 141 00:04:37.300 --> 00:04:39.259 probably one of the better takeaways I've 142 00:04:39.259 --> 00:04:40.740 seen out there. She's got a very, very 143 00:04:40.740 --> 00:04:42.980 good move, very fundamental. If you look 144 00:04:42.980 --> 00:04:44.160 at it from a down the line perspective, 145 00:04:44.540 --> 00:04:45.980 for all those people that are 146 00:04:45.980 --> 00:04:48.180 planologists or really fixated on swing 147 00:04:48.180 --> 00:04:49.019 plane, let me show you this. 148 00:04:50.339 --> 00:04:53.360 So this is an elbow plane line up from 149 00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:54.560 the hosel of the club to the base of the 150 00:04:54.560 --> 00:04:56.480 elbow. So you can see that she gets this 151 00:04:56.480 --> 00:04:57.579 club on the plane line. 152 00:04:59.939 --> 00:05:01.819 And all that club movement right there 153 00:05:01.819 --> 00:05:03.399 was facilitated by body rotation. 154 00:05:04.419 --> 00:05:07.199 So if you understand how to move your 155 00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:08.839 body and you understand where your 156 00:05:08.839 --> 00:05:10.459 priorities need to be, then golf becomes 157 00:05:10.459 --> 00:05:13.040 a lot easier. Don't try to focus on 158 00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:14.540 getting your hands and arms into certain 159 00:05:14.540 --> 00:05:16.459 positions. Focus on moving from the right 160 00:05:16.459 --> 00:05:17.899 parts. That's what we do at Rotary Swing. 161 00:05:17.959 --> 00:05:19.500 That's what we want you to be able to 162 00:05:19.500 --> 00:05:21.800 focus on. Alright, so I'm not saying that 163 00:05:21.800 --> 00:05:23.259 you don't have to work on a hand and arm 164 00:05:23.259 --> 00:05:25.100 position at the top of the swing. I want 165 00:05:25.100 --> 00:05:26.620 you to make sure that you have the two 166 00:05:26.620 --> 00:05:28.980 really big variables in place first 167 00:05:28.980 --> 00:05:30.339 before you start trying to correct those 168 00:05:30.339 --> 00:05:31.560 things. Don't put the cart before the 169 00:05:31.560 --> 00:05:33.420 horse I guess is the best expression 170 00:05:33.420 --> 00:05:35.660 here. So a couple videos I want to help 171 00:05:35.660 --> 00:05:37.000 you out with guys this week is going to 172 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:40.199 be obviously hip bump, axis tilt. And 173 00:05:40.199 --> 00:05:41.439 then there's also going to be the right 174 00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:43.319 hip line. That's weight shift number two 175 00:05:43.319 --> 00:05:44.319 video, right hip line. 176 00:05:45.180 --> 00:05:47.740 I'll do a keep the right arm straight to 177 00:05:47.740 --> 00:05:49.639 turn and we will do five minutes to 178 00:05:49.639 --> 00:05:50.399 master rotation. 179 00:05:51.539 --> 00:05:53.699 I think that will probably keep us pretty 180 00:05:53.699 --> 00:05:55.699 busy. Those videos will really kind of 181 00:05:55.699 --> 00:05:57.339 stay in line with how to prioritize and 182 00:05:57.339 --> 00:05:58.319 make sure that you're getting a full 183 00:05:58.319 --> 00:06:00.040 turn. And always guys, if you're not 184 00:06:00.040 --> 00:06:01.839 seeing these things on camera or in a 185 00:06:01.839 --> 00:06:03.839 mirror, then make sure that you have the 186 00:06:03.839 --> 00:06:06.019 important things down. Axis tilt, weight 187 00:06:06.019 --> 00:06:08.459 shift, and rotation. And you will be well 188 00:06:08.459 --> 00:06:09.860 on your way to playing some of the best 189 00:06:09.860 --> 00:06:11.639 golf of your life. Alright guys, so let's 190 00:06:11.639 --> 00:06:12.939 get out there, let's work on it, and 191 00:06:12.939 --> 00:06:13.720 let's make it a great day.
