In this video, I'll show you how we took playing professional Cory Cooper's ball striking and made it more crisp as he prepares for the Sanderson Farms PGA Tour event next year. He qualified for the event by winning the Louisiana PGA Section event that exempt him into the 2015 PGA Tour event. To better prepare Cory for the demands of PGA Tour greens, we needed to shallow out his angle of attack to help him hit the ball higher. To do this, we had to help him learn the proper amount of lag of solid ball striking because he simply had TOO MUCH lag. I am going to show you how to get rid of excess lag and release the club efficiently for a boost in clubhead speed. I am also going to show you how releasing the club properly will help you gain more control over your ball flight and increase your consistency and accuracy.
Video Practice Points
Shift left before the hands and arms start down
Allow the rotation from the torso to pull the arms down into the hitting area
Release the golf club with very little tension in the lead wrist

00:00:00.360 --> 00:00:01.979
Hey everyone, I'm Rotary Swing Instructor
2
00:00:01.979 --> 00:00:03.819
Chris Tyler and I'm here with Corey
3
00:00:03.819 --> 00:00:05.620
Cooper from New Orleans, Louisiana, Who
4
00:00:05.620 --> 00:00:08.380
has just recently qualified for the 2015
5
00:00:08.380 --> 00:00:10.980
PGA National Championship and is also
6
00:00:10.980 --> 00:00:13.580
going to be playing in the 2015 Sanderson
7
00:00:13.580 --> 00:00:15.500
Farm PGA Tour event up in Jackson,
8
00:00:15.660 --> 00:00:17.339
Mississippi. So congratulations to Corey.
9
00:00:17.559 --> 00:00:18.800
He's been a longtime member of
10
00:00:18.800 --> 00:00:20.820
RotarySwing.com And he just came down and
11
00:00:20.820 --> 00:00:22.239
joined us and I'm going to show you guys
12
00:00:22.239 --> 00:00:23.460
some of the changes that we made in his
13
00:00:23.460 --> 00:00:25.199
golf swing. That's going to show him how
14
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:26.839
to shallow out the golf club properly,
15
00:00:26.839 --> 00:00:28.219
and it's also going to give him a lot
16
00:00:28.219 --> 00:00:29.500
more speed in the hitting area.
17
00:00:38.100 --> 00:00:40.020
Okay, so in today's video, I have Corey
18
00:00:40.020 --> 00:00:41.000
here. We're going to talk a little bit
19
00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:42.560
about the corrective process. Why don't
20
00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:43.899
you go ahead and show some of our people
21
00:00:43.899 --> 00:00:45.359
at home what kind of the issues you were
22
00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:47.799
running into. Well, a couple of issues I
23
00:00:47.799 --> 00:00:50.320
was running into was actually I overdid
24
00:00:50.320 --> 00:00:50.840
the lag.
25
00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:53.560
I created too much lag.
26
00:00:54.119 --> 00:00:55.820
Didn't get rid of it early enough so that
27
00:00:55.820 --> 00:00:57.079
caused my angle of attack to get very,
28
00:00:57.079 --> 00:00:59.299
very steep somewhere around 9 to 10
29
00:00:59.299 --> 00:01:00.240
degrees with a 7 iron.
30
00:01:00.759 --> 00:01:02.880
Then I was not able to release that club
31
00:01:02.880 --> 00:01:04.840
in time. So I was fighting a double miss.
32
00:01:04.959 --> 00:01:06.280
I would either hit a big block to the
33
00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:09.040
right or I would slam the door shut and
34
00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:09.859
hit a snap hook.
35
00:01:10.859 --> 00:01:12.379
And then also I was losing club head
36
00:01:12.379 --> 00:01:14.760
speed. The harder I tried to swing, the
37
00:01:14.760 --> 00:01:17.719
steeper it got, the slower I swing. So we
38
00:01:17.719 --> 00:01:19.760
made some good changes today. Yeah, so
39
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:21.799
when Corey actually showed up here and we
40
00:01:21.799 --> 00:01:23.280
started working on the driving range, I
41
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:25.579
was noticing that on track, man. We were
42
00:01:25.579 --> 00:01:27.819
seeing a very steep angle of attack and
43
00:01:27.819 --> 00:01:29.200
we were also seeing his club head. Speed
44
00:01:29.200 --> 00:01:31.000
had kind of slowed down for the last, you
45
00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:32.500
know, over the last few weeks. And we
46
00:01:32.500 --> 00:01:34.159
looked at it on video. Why don't you go
47
00:01:34.159 --> 00:01:35.159
ahead and set up. We'll show you what we
48
00:01:35.159 --> 00:01:35.599
ran into.
49
00:01:36.840 --> 00:01:38.180
So when he was getting up into the top
50
00:01:38.180 --> 00:01:39.780
part of his golf swing, rather than
51
00:01:39.780 --> 00:01:42.620
shifting fully left, he was pulling the
52
00:01:42.620 --> 00:01:44.040
hands and arms down into the hitting
53
00:01:44.040 --> 00:01:46.340
area. Okay, So he's got his hands nearly
54
00:01:46.340 --> 00:01:48.459
in front of his lead thigh here, and he's
55
00:01:48.459 --> 00:01:49.799
still got a ton of lag. And you just
56
00:01:49.799 --> 00:01:51.879
cannot get rid of that amount of lag. And
57
00:01:51.879 --> 00:01:54.180
you can't time things up properly and be
58
00:01:54.180 --> 00:01:55.439
able to expect to keep the ball on the
59
00:01:55.439 --> 00:01:57.719
golf course. So what we did first off is
60
00:01:57.719 --> 00:01:59.640
we worked on a sequencing drill, Is, we
61
00:01:59.640 --> 00:02:01.840
wanted to try to slow the hands and the
62
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:03.560
arms down quite a bit, so he wasn't
63
00:02:03.560 --> 00:02:05.819
working nearly as hard. So we had him get
64
00:02:05.819 --> 00:02:07.159
up to the top part of his golf swing.
65
00:02:07.700 --> 00:02:10.400
We had him shift fully left, trying to
66
00:02:10.400 --> 00:02:11.620
keep the hands and arms where they were
67
00:02:11.620 --> 00:02:13.919
in the first place. And at this point we
68
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:16.180
allowed him to bring the shaft down to
69
00:02:16.180 --> 00:02:18.460
parallel to the ground. So you can see at
70
00:02:18.460 --> 00:02:19.979
this point, his hands are still outside
71
00:02:19.979 --> 00:02:22.960
of his trail thigh here, and then he's
72
00:02:22.960 --> 00:02:24.280
fully seated left, which is going to help
73
00:02:24.280 --> 00:02:25.960
him shallow things out. So let's go ahead
74
00:02:25.960 --> 00:02:26.860
and release it on through now.
75
00:02:27.659 --> 00:02:29.280
And at that point we were much more
76
00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:31.520
shallow. So we did this sequencing drill
77
00:02:31.520 --> 00:02:34.280
a number of times, got him to really kind
78
00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:36.639
of feel getting fully seated left before
79
00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:38.280
the hands and arms started down. One of
80
00:02:38.280 --> 00:02:40.379
the things that a lot of you might not be
81
00:02:40.379 --> 00:02:42.199
aware of is that. If you get up to the
82
00:02:42.199 --> 00:02:43.360
top of your golf swing and you're trying
83
00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:44.960
to pull the arms down as quickly as
84
00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:46.780
possible, they can be really, really fast
85
00:02:46.780 --> 00:02:48.439
and they're always going to win that
86
00:02:48.439 --> 00:02:50.219
race. They're going to beat the hips and
87
00:02:50.219 --> 00:02:51.080
then you're going to run into problems
88
00:02:51.080 --> 00:02:53.060
with either leaning back, bottom the club
89
00:02:53.060 --> 00:02:55.479
out really early, or in Corey's case, the
90
00:02:55.479 --> 00:02:57.560
club got really steep coming in and we
91
00:02:57.560 --> 00:02:59.659
just had a mountain of problems. So the
92
00:02:59.659 --> 00:03:01.340
next part of the process was, is that we
93
00:03:01.340 --> 00:03:03.819
had to understand why his speed was being
94
00:03:03.819 --> 00:03:04.139
hurt.
95
00:03:04.840 --> 00:03:05.979
And why don't you go ahead and set up for
96
00:03:05.979 --> 00:03:07.099
me, we'll take a look at this.
97
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:09.120
So right up to the top.
98
00:03:09.680 --> 00:03:12.080
So when he first started making golf
99
00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:13.800
swings and he was pulling his arms down,
100
00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:16.439
I could feel a ton of tension in his lead
101
00:03:16.439 --> 00:03:18.599
wrist. So much tension to where, like I
102
00:03:18.599 --> 00:03:20.740
thought he was death gripping it. Now, we
103
00:03:20.740 --> 00:03:22.080
always think of the lead wrist as kind of
104
00:03:22.080 --> 00:03:24.199
the drive of our vehicle, and if that guy
105
00:03:24.199 --> 00:03:25.639
is really tense, it's not going to allow
106
00:03:25.639 --> 00:03:27.900
the club face to rotate properly. So he
107
00:03:27.900 --> 00:03:29.620
was actually pulling the club down into
108
00:03:29.620 --> 00:03:31.699
the hitting area, tons of forward shaft
109
00:03:31.699 --> 00:03:33.240
lean, And this guy was really tensed up
110
00:03:33.240 --> 00:03:34.520
so that there was no rotation to help
111
00:03:34.520 --> 00:03:36.740
shallow things out even more. So what we
112
00:03:36.740 --> 00:03:38.080
had to do is we had to work on some left
113
00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:40.580
arm only drills, which is outlined in
114
00:03:40.580 --> 00:03:41.759
five minutes to a perfect release.
115
00:03:42.759 --> 00:03:44.099
So he's still working on it with
116
00:03:44.099 --> 00:03:44.520
sequence.
117
00:03:45.560 --> 00:03:47.139
And then at that point, he just releases
118
00:03:47.139 --> 00:03:49.219
that left wrist, and he was able to shake
119
00:03:49.219 --> 00:03:51.099
out a lot of tension there. And tell them
120
00:03:51.099 --> 00:03:53.539
what's the big difference that you notice
121
00:03:53.539 --> 00:03:54.939
with the left hand only on the golf club.
122
00:03:55.039 --> 00:03:56.520
When it's only the left hand, I notice
123
00:03:56.520 --> 00:03:58.039
that the club head is gaining speed
124
00:03:58.039 --> 00:04:00.900
without effort. Right, exactly. So when
125
00:04:00.900 --> 00:04:02.680
he was allowing just the left hand to
126
00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:04.300
kind of fall and rotate through the
127
00:04:04.300 --> 00:04:06.460
hitting area, he could feel the speed of
128
00:04:06.460 --> 00:04:07.939
the golf club gaining on its own, and
129
00:04:07.939 --> 00:04:09.280
that's what we want to do. Because he
130
00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:10.699
actually said to me at the start of the
131
00:04:10.699 --> 00:04:12.400
session, he's like, I'm working way too
132
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:13.860
hard and just not hitting the golf ball
133
00:04:13.860 --> 00:04:14.180
anywhere.
134
00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:16.839
So after that point, once we worked on
135
00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:18.199
the release, is that we started to put it
136
00:04:18.199 --> 00:04:19.560
all back together. We're going to show
137
00:04:19.560 --> 00:04:20.720
you what that looks like from down the
138
00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:21.079
line here.
139
00:04:23.300 --> 00:04:24.959
Go ahead. We're going to work up to the
140
00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:26.459
top here. This is a good sequence drill
141
00:04:26.459 --> 00:04:27.160
for you guys at home.
142
00:04:27.699 --> 00:04:29.160
Keep the hands and arms where they are.
143
00:04:29.540 --> 00:04:30.139
Sit left,
144
00:04:30.819 --> 00:04:31.660
club shaft parallel.
145
00:04:32.620 --> 00:04:34.319
Go ahead and release it through. So it
146
00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:36.740
had a really crisp sound to it, didn't
147
00:04:36.740 --> 00:04:38.600
take much of a divot at all. And at the
148
00:04:38.600 --> 00:04:39.939
start of our session, you were digging
149
00:04:39.939 --> 00:04:41.420
some monster trenches, some of those
150
00:04:41.420 --> 00:04:42.500
things that we could actually lay down
151
00:04:42.500 --> 00:04:45.639
in. They were pretty big. So by working
152
00:04:45.639 --> 00:04:47.199
on sequencing and understanding how to
153
00:04:47.199 --> 00:04:48.959
reprioritize his golf swing, we were able
154
00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:50.560
to take his angle of attack down from 9
155
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:52.620
degrees to... Cut it in half. Cut it in
156
00:04:52.620 --> 00:04:54.079
half, about 4 or 5 degrees angle of
157
00:04:54.079 --> 00:04:55.819
attack. And then talk to him a little bit
158
00:04:55.819 --> 00:04:57.779
about what speed did. Well, with the 7
159
00:04:57.779 --> 00:04:59.379
-iron, you know, I started out, I would
160
00:04:59.379 --> 00:05:01.360
range from 90 to 92 miles an hour. And
161
00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:02.040
then when we were finished,
162
00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:04.699
if it felt like I'd barely swung at the
163
00:05:04.699 --> 00:05:07.379
ball, I was 95. But if I swung at it, not
164
00:05:07.379 --> 00:05:08.540
really swinging hard, but swinging
165
00:05:08.540 --> 00:05:11.339
faster, it would get up to 97, 97 and a
166
00:05:11.339 --> 00:05:13.160
half. Yeah, so there you go. We picked up
167
00:05:13.160 --> 00:05:14.740
5 miles an hour of club head speed and we
168
00:05:14.740 --> 00:05:16.180
shallowed his golf swing out beautifully.
169
00:05:16.500 --> 00:05:18.480
And just a few hours of work and re
170
00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:19.060
-sequencing,
171
00:05:19.720 --> 00:05:21.220
reprioritizing his golf swing.
172
00:05:21.519 --> 00:05:23.439
Understanding where the power sources are
173
00:05:23.439 --> 00:05:24.939
and understanding how to turn those
174
00:05:24.939 --> 00:05:27.519
things into speed the correct way. So, in
175
00:05:27.519 --> 00:05:28.959
turn, what we've done is we've been able
176
00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:30.540
to get rid of his two-directional miss,
177
00:05:31.079 --> 00:05:32.779
we've shallowed out his club properly,
178
00:05:32.819 --> 00:05:34.199
and then we've picked up speed where it
179
00:05:34.199 --> 00:05:35.980
counts and that's at impact. So those of
180
00:05:35.980 --> 00:05:37.399
you at home that are having problems with
181
00:05:37.399 --> 00:05:39.240
sequencing your golf swing or trying to
182
00:05:39.240 --> 00:05:40.259
feel like you're doing too much with the
183
00:05:40.259 --> 00:05:42.060
hands and the arms, try this drill out.
184
00:05:42.279 --> 00:05:43.459
Make sure you work up to the top of your
185
00:05:43.459 --> 00:05:45.439
swing. Try to leave the hands and arms
186
00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:47.439
where they are. Make sure you're fully
187
00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:49.879
seated left. Then club shaft needs to be
188
00:05:49.879 --> 00:05:51.220
parallel to the ground and then go ahead
189
00:05:51.220 --> 00:05:51.980
and release it on through.
190
00:05:53.980 --> 00:05:54.879
You're going to hear us talk about that
191
00:05:54.879 --> 00:05:56.139
video a lot. It's a great video that
192
00:05:56.139 --> 00:05:58.160
keeps you understanding how to control
193
00:05:58.160 --> 00:05:59.800
the face and get a lot of that tension
194
00:05:59.800 --> 00:06:01.399
out of that lead wrist. Alright guys, so
195
00:06:01.399 --> 00:06:02.279
get out there and let's play some great
196
00:06:02.279 --> 00:06:03.339
golf. I wish you all the best.
"I think he's come very close
to a golf swing model that appears to be ideal...It's a big muscle, motor-driven swing
that's repeatable...You don't have to be a super athlete."

"I started playing at 70 years old,
at the beginning I was scoring around 100 plus... Following the RST 5 Step System
my scores are in the 80 to 86 range. I am out-hitting guys in their 40's and 50's,
thanks to you and your system. My back or other muscles never ache, nor am I tired after
